Meaning of colours for bridesmaid dresses

Are you planning your wedding? Can’t decide on the colour scheme for the bridesmaid dresses? Maybe we can help! Colours can signify different things depending upon the culture or region.  We have put a short article together about colours, the vibe they give off and about their traditions.

Diamond-White: Ever since Queen Victoria, bright diamond-white has enjoyed strong associations with purity and the privileged. The significance of wearing a white wedding gown in the 21st century is still thought to mean that the bride is pure. However  these days, white may have a lot more to do with modernity.

Ivory: Ivory is elegant, old-world and soft-spoken. Ivory represents quiet, pleasantness with a touch of luster. As a neutral, ivory is a calming colour. It carries some of the same pureness, softness, and cleanliness of white but is slightly richer, a touch warmer.

Champagne: Refined and traditional, rich and conservative. Champagne has a slightly vintage feel.

Lavender: Soft, dainty and ladylike. Lavender suggests refinement along with grace, elegance, and something special. This colour often appears in weddings that hark to the past, with traditional-looking cakes and florals.

Pink: It is thought to represent femininity and romance.  Use pink to convey playfulness, fun and happinness (hot pink flamingoes) and tenderness (pastel pinks).

Red:  The colour most readily associated with passion, desire, and love.  In other cultures, red can symbolize purity or good fortune.  Red is a high-drama colour, and although there is a shade of red for everyone, this would be the wrong colour to have in varying shades at the altar, as they easily clash with each other.

Coral: In weddings, this colour often has an indie vibe. It might have a Latino, East Indian or Caribbean feel, or just a strong designer foundation.

Yellow: Optimism, cheerfulness, a strong appreciation for friendship. Yellow connotes optimism and light-hearted cheeriness.  Yellow is not a flattering colour for everyone, so consider the skin tones of your wedding party before choosing the shade.

Gold: Lavishness, luxury, warmth, tradition. It is a warm colour that can be both bright and cheerful as well as traditional.

Aqua: Fun-loving, fresh and vibrant. Fearless and creative the colour encourages a festive and celebratory mood. It’s close association with water conjures the more emotional qualities of fun, letting go and joy.

Royal Blue: Grand, traditional, and casting an eye toward an idealized past. In many diverse cultures blue is significant in religious beliefs, brings peace.

Purple:  Historically known as the colour of royalty, purple still implies elegance and wealth. It symbolizes power, nobility, luxury, and sophistication. It conveys wealth and extravagance. It is also feminine and romantic. However, because it is rare in nature, purple can appear exotic or artificial. In lighter shades, purple is considered very youthful.

Silver: Restrained wealth and glamour, sophistication. The colour silver is often seen as a sophisticated colour and along with gold it represents wealth and riches.

Grey: Modern, understated, retro-informed and sleek. This colour actually is emotionally-neutral.  It does imply a certain amount of conservative tradition and formality Lately, grey has deposed champagne as one of the hottest neutrals in weddings. Bridesmaids in grey with deco-rhinestone buckled sashes look up-to-the-minute … and stunning.

Green: Represents nature and fertility.  Almost all shades, green are an incredibly popular couple with both men and women.  It is relaxing to look at and gives an appearance of health and vitality. In weddings, green reveals a modern sensibility, and often comes with inventive, non-traditional florals.

Hope we helped you to decide on the colour scheme for your wedding!

Money Saving Tips for your Hen Weekend

How to save money on your your hen weekend? There are plenty of ways that you can save money without missing out on a whole lot of fun! Having a hen weekend doesn’t have to be ridiculously extravagant but you can still have a stylish and fun filled weekend or evening without needing to take out a personal loan. Below we’ve listed some areas where you should and shouldn’t scrimp on cost!

Activity

You might be surprised how affordable some of our activities are so if you really feel like doing something with the girls during the day that won’t break the bank chat to one of the people here in the office and they can tell you which packages are in your price range.

Destination

Some destinations are more expensive than others so if you are on a budget, you might want to avoid the bright lights of London! It also depends where you are based as what often costs the most is travelling to your locations so if you can find somewhere local it will be much more affordable than trying plane, train or bus it there!

Accommodation

Accommodation doesn’t need to be the Ritz, as long as you are somewhere clean and comfortable that’s the important thing, let’s face it girlies on the ideal hen weekend you won’t be getting that much sleep as you tear up the town with your best mates having fun. If you are staying in accommodation, don’t try and save too much on this. By only paying pennies, you could end up in the outskirts of no-where sharing with a group of strangers. Check out our accommodation search engine for the best prices and locations!

Food

If you’re out on a hen weekend then you will definitely need food so you can’t miss this essential item. Take advantage of some of the deals Spicy Hen already has with some great restaurants. Still too much, well if you’re the kind of girls that just want something to soak up the booze, that’s what fast food was invented for!

Drink

We would never suggest you take this out of the equation, but depending on your group size you might want to either split into groups for buying smaller rounds so it’s easier to keep track of what you’ve spent, or perhaps consider having a kitty for the group where you all put in a set amount and spend it till the money’s gone. At least this way you know exactly how much you’ve spent rather than trying to calculate those entire rounds that you bought.

Essential Hen Party Advice: Safety

A hen night is a fantastic celebration of your friend’s forthcoming wedding and we’re sure you’ll have a party to remember, but we at Spicy Hen want you to remember it for all the right reasons.

We have prepared some simple ways to help keep your Hen Party safe, particularly if you’re on a hen weekend in a different city:

Hotel:

1. Make sure you text all your hens the following phone numbers before you start drinking:

  • Chief bridesmaid,
  • Hotel reception,as well as the hotel address
  • Local taxi number (you can always pick up a leaflet from the hotel reception)

2. If you have time then also print out the hotel details and give them to each hen as they arrive so they have all the details more than once! It may seem excessive but lose your phone on a night out and you have no way of getting back to the hotel if you can’t remember its details.

3. Make sure everybody has a hotel key. Or, you might want to leave the hotel key at the reception so you don’t need to look after it.

4. If possible pre-book taxis for returning to the hotel.

Nightlife

  • Try to keep your hens in one group, which can be done by planning the bars to visit using out City Guides.
  • Control your drinking!
  • Keep an eye on any drink or food to make sure nobody slips something in.
  • Being a hen party it’s more than likely you’ll attract some male attention.  If you do and somebody offers to buy you a drink then go to the bar with them to make sure nothing is added.
  • Don’t leave your phone, purse etc. on display, they are easily pinched in a club or bar.
  • Never let anybody leave alone.  If a hen or any of the girls needs to go home or back to the hotel then somebody should go with them.

Getting home

  • Pre-book taxis home, or a minibus if there’s a group of you, using a reliable company.
  • If you’ve booked a taxi then ask the driver for the name of the person he’s come to collect and the destination before getting in.  Don’t tell him this, make him tell you.  Remember: Licensed cabs should have ID on display.
  • Don’t walk home.  It doesn’t really get simpler than that, especially in a city you don’t know!

We hope you found this article useful.  It isn’t set out to scare you and the vast majority of hen parties pass without incident but we really care about you and these few steps can help keep you and your hens out of harm’s way and leave you free to enjoy your night.
